Jeff Wall’s reinvention of Japanese artist Hokusai’s print. Katsushika Hokusai was an artist, ukiyo-e painter and printmaker of the Edo period.
A lot of film and photography work seems to reflect and embed contemporary styles/practices/trends. Generally, these works feel superfluous and flat and a whole group ends up looking and feeling the same, a great wave of imitation will follow one innovator. The lowest form of inspiration usually takes the form of (e.g.) “liking Hemmingway’s style ergo writing like Hemmingway.”
This recreation feels original; Jeff Wall has made this work his own.
